Results Solidify Deep Instinct as a Leader in Prevention
NEW YORK, NY – March 31, 2022 – <a href="https://www.deepinstinct.com/" target="_self">Deep Instinct</a>, the first company to apply end-to-end deep learning to cybersecurity, today announced the results of its first participation in MITRE Engenuity’s <a href="https://attackevals.mitre-engenuity.org/" target="_self">ATT&CK® Evaluations</a>. This round emulated the malicious activities of the <a href="https://attack.mitre.org/groups/G0102/" target="_self">Wizard Spider</a> and <a href="https://attack.mitre.org/groups/G0034/" target="_self">Sandworm Team</a> threat groups, highlighting results across 30 vendors. The protection segment results validated the strength and robustness of Deep Instinct’s multi-layered, prevention-first approach and unambiguously highlighted the value of its platform. Deep Instinct also achieved exemplary detection coverage across various execution, persistence, and impact techniques emulated.
Until recently, MITRE Engenuity ATT&CK Evaluations focused on assessing the ability to detect and respond post infection. This is tied closely with the reactive, “assume breach” mindset of the past decade – which looks for anomalous behaviors to stop a breach once an attack has executed on the endpoint. Beginning last year, MITRE Engenuity added a protection component to the test, which aims at evaluating a solutions’ ability to prevent attacks.
Key takeaways from Deep Instinct’s MITRE Engenuity participation include the following:&nbsp;<ol><li>Deep Instinct provided visibility and detection to adversary activities in all 15 attack steps tested.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Our prevention and suspicious activity detection engines achieved excellent detection coverage on techniques related to execution, persistence, command and control, and impact tactics, as well as additional visibility and insight into all other tactics included in the test.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Over 93% of the Deep Instinct detections were at an analytic level (beyond simple telemetry), with 92% being at the highest detection level and technique. This attests to the high level of context, correlation, and actionability of the events and data presented to the user, reducing both the time and manual hunting and analysis resources required.</li></ol>

Deep Instinct Shows a 100% Prevention Score in the 2022 MITRE Engenuity ATT&CK® Evaluations for Enterprise

NEW YORK, NY, February 28, 2022 – <a href="http://www.deepinstinct.com/">Deep Instinct</a>, the first company to apply end-to-end deep learning to cybersecurity, today unveiled findings from its bi-annual <a href="https://info.deepinstinct.com/cyber-threat-landscape-report">Threat Landscape Report</a>. The Deep Instinct Threat Research team extensively monitored attack volumes and types and then extrapolated their findings to predict where the future of cybersecurity is heading, determine what motivates attackers, and most importantly, lays out the steps organizations can take now in order to protect themselves in the future. One of the most pronounced takeaways from this research on 2021 threat trends is that bad actors are becoming more successful at evading AI/ML technologies, prompting organizations to redouble efforts in the innovation race.Specific attack vectors have grown substantially, including a 170% rise in the use of Office droppers along with a 125% uptick in all threat types combined. The volume of all malware types is substantially higher versus pre-pandemic. In addition, threat actors have made a discernable shift away from older programming languages, such as C and C++, in favor of newer languages, such as Python and Go. Not only are these newer languages easier to learn and to program versus their predecessors, but they also have been less commonly used and are therefore less likely to be detected by cybersecurity tools or analyzed by security researchers.“Recent major events, such as Log4j and Microsoft Exchange server attacks, have placed a heightened priority on security, but these threats have long deserved the attention they’re just now getting on a global level,” said Guy Caspi, CEO of Deep Instinct. “The results of this research sheds light on the wide-ranging security challenges that organizations face on a daily basis. Deep Instinct was founded to bring a new approach based on deep learning to cybersecurity. We’re on a mission to provide relief to cyber defenders facing advanced threats that continue to spike in volume and sophistication.”Additional report findings include the following key takeaways:<ul><li>Supply chain attacks: Large service offering companies became targets of significant supply chain attacks this past year with threat actors looking to not only gain access to their environments, but also target the environments of their customers by proxy. The most notable supply chain attack, Kaseya, compromised more than 1,500 companies through one unpatched zero-day vulnerability.</li><li>The shift to high-impact and high-profile attacks vs. stealth and long dwell-time attacks: In 2021, Deep Instinct saw a transition to high-profile attacks with a massive impact. The most significant incident in 2021 was the Colonial Pipeline breach, which halted operations for six days, causing major disruptions across the U.S. and demonstrated the significant and cascading impact of a well-executed malware attack.</li><li>Public and Private Sector collaborations become more common: As Deep Instinct had predicted, there was greater partnership amongst international task forces this past year to identify and bring to justice key threat actors around the world. In early 2021, an international taskforce coordinated by Europol and Eurojust seized Emotet infrastructure and arrested some of its operators. Other high-profile threat actors such as Glupteba became the target of private companies that joined forces to interrupt their activity as much as possible.</li><li>The immediate impact of zero-day: In 2021, there were major vulnerabilities being exploited and used within a single day of disclosing the vulnerability. One of the examples was the HAFNIUM Group, which surfaced shortly after Microsoft revealed multiple zero-day vulnerabilities.</li><li>Cloud as a gateway for attackers: The transition to remote work has prompted many organizations to enable most of their services in the cloud rather than on premises. For those that are not experienced working with cloud services, there is the risk that misconfigurations or vulnerable, out-of-date components with external API access could be exploited.</li></ul>While the increase in the highest profile threat, ransomware, has not continued to increase at the exponential rates initially seen during the outbreak of COVID-19 in spring 2020, Deep Instinct has still recorded double digit (15.8 percent) growth of these threats in 2021. Last year proved to both CISOs and cyberattackers that work-from-anywhere and hybrid models would likely become a permanent fixture. CISOs will need to carefully review, monitor, and update security considerations to ensure full coverage and protection.A ransomware attack can affect any organization, regardless of size, industry, or location. As more and more security vendors use machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) in their products and take actions to improve their existing defense mechanisms, bad actors will also continue to hone and improve efforts to evade and fool both traditional and AI-based defenses. Defense evasion and privilege escalation are becoming more prevalent and we expect to see a continuation of EPP/EDR evasion techniques in 2022. New Vice President of Product and Vice President of Research & Development to Lead Deep Instinct’s Technology Roadmap

NEW YORK, NY (February 10, 2022) – <a href="https://www.deepinstinct.com/">Deep Instinct</a>, the first company to apply end-to-end deep learning to cybersecurity, today announced the addition of two recognized security experts to its executive leadership team. Yariv Fishman joins as Vice President of Product, and Ofir Arkin joins as Vice President of Research & Development (R&D) to help the company further develop its technology roadmap for 2022 and beyond.

Fishman brings more than 20 years of leadership experience specifically focused on cybersecurity. Prior to joining Deep Instinct, Fishman held leadership positions at Microsoft, where he led the Cloud App Security product portfolio, Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps, and initiated the global MSSP and security partner program for Azure Security. Prior to Microsoft, Fishman was Head of Product Management for Cloud Security at Check Point, leading the Cloud Guard product portfolio. He also initiated and lead SanDisk’s Enterprise Security products, protecting, and managing removable storage.

He has a strong reputation for bringing cutting edge technologies to market, in which several of these have been industry firsts. 

Prior to joining Deep Instinct, Arkin’s career has previously bridged academia, consulting, and executive management positions. Most recently, Arkin spent more than three years at Forcepoint, where he was the Vice President and General Manager of the User and Data Protection business unit. Before Forcepoint, Arkin was VP of Security for Mellanox Technologies and held various roles within McAfee (Intel Security), such as VP Global Chief Architect and VP & CTO of the Security Management Business Unit. He was also the Founder and CTO of Insightix, which McAfee acquired in 2012.

This latest survey follows its initial report from July 2021, which found that 83 percent of cybersecurity professionals were dissatisfied with current EPP and EDR solutions and feel that they deserve better.The average global response to a cyberattack was found to be 20.9 hours—more than two “working” days. Given the lag time that security teams often face when responding to an attack, survey respondents were uncertain whether it is possible to prevent the constant waves of attacks from cybercriminals. In addition, security operations professionals cite threats from within as a persistent issue; 86 percent do not have confidence that their fellow employees will not click on malicious links, easily allowing threats into an environment and initiating an attack or breach.SOC Security Challenges Exposure to ransomware and other malware is far from fixed, but there are plenty of other key challenges that security professionals continue to face as well.<ul><li>Concerns about addressing cyberattacks:</li><ul><li>The lack of threat prevention specific to never-before-seen malware (44%) is a top concern.</li><li>Hidden persistence, whereby threat actors discreetly maintain long-term access to systems despite disruptions such as restarts or changed credentials, is the most feared tactic used by attackers to launch large-scale attacks (40%).</li><li>Lack of qualified SecOps staff (35%) causes challenges for incident response, especially amongst those working in healthcare (52%) and the public sector (55%).</li></ul><li>Complete endpoint security coverage remains elusive:</li><ul><li>Nearly all of those surveyed (99%) believe they don’t have every endpoint in their company secured by at least one agent.</li><li>One-third (32%) of respondents claim that every endpoint has the same level of protection, with a majority of 60% claiming they are unable to consistently block threats across endpoints.</li></ul><li>Cloud storage and malicious file challenges:</li><ul><li>Files stored in the cloud are an unchecked vulnerability for 80% of respondents.</li><li>68% of respondents had some concern with fellow employees unwittingly uploading malicious files and compromising environments.</li></ul></ul>“Ransomware and malware attacks aren’t going away anytime soon. Respondents in the tech space were optimistic about efforts to combat cyber threats and twice as likely as those in other sectors to believe that prevention of all malware is possible. The financial services industry is at the head of the pack when it comes to incident response time, responding to incidents nearly four hours sooner than counterparts in other business sectors. Two-thirds (66%) of total respondents believe that it will be possible to prevent all threats from infiltrating their organization’s network in the next two to five years. Additionally, 59% of those surveyed are optimistic regarding the viability of both prevention (57%) and detection (62%). By automatically detecting and preventing threats, security teams can focus on the most pressing issues versus being inundated with constant alerts. Survey Methodology Deep Instinct’s report analyzed feedback from 1,500 senior cybersecurity professionals across 11 key countries that work for businesses with more than 1,000 employees and revenue north of $500M annually.
